For our Youth Art Program, we’ve chosen to draw inspiration from the message behind Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, and 3). As a collective piece, the song explores a powerful theme: the narrator reflects on key life events that led him to emotionally detach from the outside world. Each experience becomes a “brick” in a metaphorical wall he builds to protect himself.
Part 1: Emotion
In Part 1 of the song, the narrator recalls his earliest traumatic experience—marking the first “brick” in his emotional wall. This becomes a metaphor for facing adversity through emotional resilience.
Weeks 1 & 2 will focus on helping students explore different art mediums that best allow them to express their emotions. With the guidance of our instructors, students will experiment with a range of tools including paints, markers, pencils, and oil pastels. They'll learn foundational techniques such as shading, highlighting, blending, stippling, outlining, and splattering. This phase is all about discovering how to give life to emotion through artistic expression.
Part 2: Freedom of Expression
In Part 2, the narrator reflects on his time in school, where oppressive teaching methods stifled his creativity. He portrays teachers as figures who punished independent thought, leading him to reject rigid systems that inhibit artistic freedom.
Weeks 3 & 4 will empower students to reclaim their creative voice. With the support of instructors, each student will begin developing a personal art concept. During this phase, we will study a variety of artists and styles, allowing students to discover techniques that resonate with them. The goal is for each student to find their muse—something or someone that inspires them deeply—and to begin crafting a project that they’ll continue working on through the remainder of the program.
Part 3: Healing
In Part 3, the narrator reaches a breaking point, retreating completely into himself. The wall is now fully built, created from years of pain and disconnection. But within this darkness lies the potential for self-awareness and healing.
Weeks 5 & 6 are dedicated to raw, uninhibited self-expression. Students will be given the space and tools to create art in any form they choose—within the organization’s guidelines. This final phase encourages them to explore difficult emotions, share unspoken truths, and ultimately, use art as a form of personal healing.
These completed works will be showcased at our culminating event:
